Results: Jesse Owens Track Classic (5/1/2010)

JIMMY O’BRIEN(1500 rabbit Friday night & 800 on Saturday)

(#5 All-Time Personal 800 list) – Season Best

SPLITS: 800 = 12.9-12.50(25.4)-13.4-14.2(27.6-53.0)

                         14.2-14.0(28.2-1:21.2)-13.5-14.2(27.7) = 1:48.8

                          FAT = 1:49.05 SB

SPLITS: 800 = 13.7-14.8(28.5)-15.8-15.9(31.7-60.2)
            15.6-16.6(32.2-1:32.4)-15.4-14.8(30.2-62.4-2:02.6)
            14.6-14.5(29.1-2:32.7)-14.5(2:46.2)…rabbit

NOTES: good tactical race… guarding your outside shoulder re getting boxed in is tough when on the rail but you stayed calm and waited for the door to open that almost always opens in the last 130 meters.  Another good start over first 40m to stay out of trouble with inside box #2 position drawn on a box alley start.  This double back after a fast 1200m pacing the 1500 the night before bodes well at this date for our preparation to have the strength/fitness to advance out of round one at USA Outdoor in late June and be able to race again on Day #2.

STEVE LUDWIG – (1500 & Mile rabbit)

1500 Splits:  14.6-15.3(29.9)-15.8-15.9(31.7-61.6)
              15.5-15.6(31.1-1:32.7)-16.3-16.0(32.3-63.4-2:05.0)
              15.1-15.1(30.2-2:35.2)-14.5-14.4(28.9-59.1-3:04.1)
              14.3-14.7(3:33.1)-15.3(2:48.5ht) = 3:48.71 PR

NOTES: Good job verifying that you have the base to double back of off 1500 meter racing as the ease with which you cruised the pacing efforts on Saturday in the Mile certainly indicates more significant PR’s are available at 1500 meters AND this reflects at least one benefit from the unprecedented sustained high mileage training since last fall.  Now we will look to improve our tactical commitments in races and look at your 800 fitness off of all the strength training.  Based on last year the speed work that is progressing now will potentially pay big dividends in June.

NATE BROWNING – (400 & 800 rabbit)

SPLITS: 11.2-10.7(21.9)-11.9(33.8)-14.2(48.0ht) FAT = 48.24

NOTES: good job staying aggressive on the front end of this race as we discussed.  Your recovery and 500m pacing effort for the fast section of the 800 reconfirms excellent strength/base and now we just need to keep working in the speed and speed strength sessions AND stay aggressive with each outing to speed your return to the 47’s in this excellent comeback after a year away from training and racing.  Keep the competitive ego in check while slow final times are posted.  Your position and splits were very solid through 300 and soon enough you will finish out a 400 off of this pace.

RICARDO BELL – (400 & 800r)

SPLITS: 800 = 12.8-12.8(25.6)-13.5-14.2(27.7-53.3)-14.2(1:07.5)-15.4(29.6-1:22.9) DNF

NOTES: in retrospect, given current fitness, the first 200 was likely a little quick for a best performance at 800m on this day BUT we did accomplish a step in assessing your fitness to race 1:48 type race. Your recovery was very good again so we should have no fears regarding your base for the rest of this race season as we look to steadily drop long run distances and total training volume over the next 4-5 weeks. We will continue to build in the speed in training sessions through May including another race outing at 400m where we will look to drop something in the 48’s. All remaining 800 races this season will have you on the track at home with excellent competition so let’s get ready to enjoy some racing over the next few weeks.

MASON CATHEY – (VA Invite Steeple)

NOTES: just as with last season… big “flat” spot in training and racing due to hard training is nothing for concern (though we can look at adjustments in cycling hard work to avoid this to this degree in the future) as “we” all know what you did after the “flat” spot… more PR’s and a opportunity to make your first USA Nationals Steeple Final remain alive and well.  We’ll forget this weekend and move on.  In the next few days we will follow the same plan re workouts that allowed us to break out of the flat spot last year.

ADRIAN MYERS

OFF: managing the purchase, closing and relocation to a new home.

JUAN CARRILLO

OFF: guarding against relapse in minor leg issue.

TEAM NOTES: Billy Hayes Invitational is up next.
