April 18, 2013 (Indianapolis, IN) The Indiana Invaders traveled to Furman University this past weekend participating in the Furman Blue Shoes Invitational and played a key pace-setting role in the featured Blue Shoes Elite Mile event.  Up next for the Indiana Invaders will be an appearance and similarly supportive role focused on early season pace-setting this weekend at the Jesse Owens Classic.

The Furman Blue Shoes Invitational, highlighted by the Blue Shoes Elite Mile, was its sixteenth anniversary and featured an energetic atmosphere of mixed collegiate and high school competition.

The highlight of the event was the Blue Shoes Elite Mile, in which four individuals broke the four minute barrier. Cory Leslie won the competition in a meet record time, 3:56.18, and led a top three “sweep” by the Furman Elite Post-Collegiate training group. The occasion marked the meet's first time with multiple individuals under 4 minutes in one race.

The top four athletes in the race; Leslie, Jeff See, Jack Bolas, and Matt Elliott are each American Milers Club Series "Alumni" as they have competed in the series hosted by the Indiana Invaders in Indianapolis annually in June.

Invaders Jeremiah Vaughan and Drake Sterling provided pacing for the mile race where they successfully took the pack through their splits precisely at 58 seconds and 1:57 for 400 and 800 meters respectively. Vaughan carried the group through approximately 1000 meters before leaving the race to the remaining competitors.

Adam Lang, in his first outdoor competition with the Invaders, won the 800 meter run with a strong last 150 meters in a time of 1:51.22. The time was a season best for Lang and a personal best for a season opener. Sterling provided double duty, rabbiting the 800 as well and taking the leaders through the 600 meter mark in 1:21 seconds.

Derek Bischak also provided pace-setting duties for the meet. He successfully paced the open 1500 meter competition through 1100 meters in 2:55.

The Invaders will look to continue their pace-setting duties as a part of their early pre-seaon competition outings this coming weekend at the Jesse Owens Invitational at Ohio State. The Invaders have had a multi-year history of providing successful pacing duties at Ohio State's premier  track meet.

Coach Greg Harger said, "The Invaders aim to "give back" to those athletes was much appreciated by the Furman Elite group as well as the staff at Furman and a valuable experience for the pace-setters involved.  These outings and occasional similar efforts at selected indoor events help build the sense of community among our national middle distance athletes which peaks annually with our American Milers Club High Performance Series in June".  Harger added, "This core of athletes are doing vital work over the next few weeks as they roll into their personal true season openers. Their efforts are uniquely preparing them for a June PR season. Simultaneously, their competition appearances are accelerating our recruiting efforts for both the AMC Series and for our growing roster as we prepare to make a public launch of our "Gold Medal Program".
