INDIANA INVADERS OPEN CROSS COUNTRY SEASON STRONG
October 9, 2000
(INDIANAPOLIS)-- The Indiana Invaders, in their first competition of
the cross country season, ran 5 women and 3 men at the 2nd Annual Home
Depot Cross Country Invitational held at Genesee Valley Park in
Rochester, NY. The women's team, lead by Collette Liss, easily
captured the women's overall title.
Following Liss's first place finish, the Invaders' were well
represented
by Priscilla Hein (2nd), Kelly French (4th), Judy Porter (5th),
and Stephanie Dueringer (14th).
The Invaders' men posted very competitive efforts against a tough
international cross country field. The Invaders' Gareth Wilford came
up
just short in a spirited battle with Paul Mwangi (Kenya) of the
Westchester TC for the over-all individual victory. Mwangi's winning
time of 23:35.96 edging Wilford by less than one second (23:36.68).
Rick Sluder finished 10th in 23:57.02 and Todd Moroney completed the
course in 17th place with a solid 24:37 effort on a soft, wet course
not
conducive to fast times.
"This was a very solid outing for each of the athletes we ran today and
it was great to see a couple of newcomers to the club perform.
Priscilla Hein for the women and Rick Sluder for the men are going to
make major contributions to our distance group," said Head Coach Chris
Buhler. He added, "We are excited about the coming cross country
season
as both our men's and women's teams are much improved over last year.
It is very early in the season, with our goals being focused on the
Fall
Cross Country National Championships at the end of November and the
World Cross Country Trials in February, so several of our people here
today are just getting into their hard training and several are not
even
on this trip today as they prepare for the meets a little later in the
year. "
"The format and opportunity that this cross country meet offers with a
true cross country setting and prize money was something that we felt
strongly about as an organization. We had to make the trip and support
the efforts of the Genesee Valley Harriers and all the folks promoting
cross country in this area. It is a rare opportunity for
post-collegiate runners and clubs to compete in a cross country setting
with these rewards," said Club Director Greg Harger. He added, " This
event was very energizing to our athletes as we turn our attention on
the USATF Fall Cross Country Championships and the opportunities to
improve on last year's team 2nd (women) and 8th (men) place finishes."
